Quality assurance Workshop

This hands-on workshop is one of the four specialised training events within the UPLIFT. This workshop provides a practical and theoretical introduction to quality assurance (QA) methodologies essential for modern radiotherapy, with a specific focus on the unique challenges and opportunities presented by upright patient positioning.
Workshop Overview
Participants will gain foundational knowledge and practical skills across three core areas:
1. Photon QA: The principles of quality assurance for photon-based radiotherapy, covering dosimetric measurements, beam characterisation, and verification procedures. Emphasis will be placed on understanding how QA protocols may need to be adapted when transitioning from conventional supine to upright treatment geometries.
2. Proton QA: Specific QA requirements of proton beam therapy, including range verification, dose delivery accuracy, and the physical properties that distinguish proton beams from photon beams. Discussion on how upright positioning influences proton therapy planning and delivery, and what this means for QA workflows, will follow.
3. 3D Printing of Phantoms: 3D printing technology in the fabrication of custom phantoms for radiotherapy QA, including material selection, design considerations, and the role of patient-specific and anthropomorphic phantoms in validating treatment plans.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the fundamental principles of photon and proton QA in a radiotherapy context
  • Identify the QA challenges specific to upright radiotherapy delivery
  • Appreciate the role of 3D-printed phantoms as flexible, cost-effective tools for dosimetric verification
  • Engage critically with QA literature and protocols relevant to the UPLIFT research programme
