Description
Internal dose assessment involves complex analytical procedures and expert judgement, including the selection of appropriate biokinetic models, evaluation of measurement uncertainties, and the application of case-specific assumptions. Consequently, identical measurement data may lead to different intake and dose estimates when assessed by different laboratories. Intercomparison exercises therefore play a key role in promoting harmonisation and identifying areas for improvement in internal dosimetry practice.
The European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS) Working Group on Internal Exposure (WG7) organised the second InterComparison of Internal DOSE assessment (ICIDOSE#2) to support harmonisation among internal dosimetry services within and beyond Europe. The aim of ICIDOSE#2 was to perform internal dose assessments in accordance with the latest recommendations (e.g. Technical Recommendations – RP188, ICRP OIR Report Series) and relevant accreditation standards.
The exercise included five cases of varying complexity, addressing both simple and more challenging scenarios: (1) routine dosimetry with long monitoring intervals, (2) dose assessment based on limited measurement data, (3) routine monitoring scenarios, (4) intake via wound, and (5) potential exposure of a pregnant laboratory worker.
The intercomparison was highly successful, with 41 participants from 22 countries demonstrating strong international engagement. On average, participants submitted results for four of the five cases. A dedicated workshop for intercomparison participants was held on 13 – 14 May 2025 in Budapest, Hungary, and played a central role in the exercise. It enabled constructive discussions, highlighted methodological differences and the influence of analytical tools, and provided valuable input for further harmonisation and potential future revisions of the guidance.
Details of the cases and the statistical evaluation of the submitted results will be presented, together with general conclusions and recommendations.
